Twig's Garden

Small UF's

I've been working with smalls for a number of years now.  These are some of the plants, both registered and seedlings of mine and Ned Roberts.

I should mention that the small seedlings from Ned Roberts have two prefixes, "BR" and "NR."  In 2008, a number of plants were selected for intro and have the "BR" indicator.  Stats were taken in Florida and some were introduced, but some were not.

In 2009, we were able to retrieve some plants before Ladybug discontinued introducing for Ned.  I picked out a few that were not selected for introduction, simply because they were so special.  Those have the "NR" prefix and are still under evaluation (in the north) for introduction.

This Ned seedling was selected for introduction in 2008, but that didn’t happen.  4 ½”, 24 ½” Ht, maroon, 19 BC, 3-way branching in FL.

Please note the vast difference between this seedling and Long Tall Sally – one of my favorite pics!:)

The intense curling and the unbelievable green throat are outstanding.  I love the green on the inner sepals!

This Ned seedling was selected for introduction in 2008, but that didn’t happen.   FL stats: Early, 4”, 21” Ht, dark purple, yellow/green throat, curly sepals, 13 BC in FL.

Definitely higher BC up north, but someone/something cut off the top part of the most mature scape this year.  Secondary branch had 10 buds.  Extremely good substance and all around good plant.  Fertile both ways.

My personal favorite among the small dark reds and purples, this image shows more red than the deep purple that my eye sees.

This has gained enough attention, I am proud to feature it on the 2012 National in Cindy Osman’s “Lady Hybridizer’s Bed.”  The flower is only 5-6”, but it is sweet, sweet, sweet!  Just look at those ruffles!  Height is proportionate, about 28”.  Pod difficult, pollen fertile.

Extremely fertile both ways.

(Benesh, 1955)  Season M, Dormant, Diploid,  Deep ruby red self. ((Wekiwa × Kanapaha) × Chivalry)

While the AHS Checklist does not give a size, it’s 3-4”, about 28” tall and well branched in my Zone 5 garden.  I highly suspect that Ned Roberts used it in his small program.

Warrell, 2009  Height 42", bloom 5", season M, Dormant, Diploid, 14 buds, 3 branches, Unusual Form Cascade,  Near white self above green throat. (Frozen Mert × sdlg)

New to the garden in 2010, I planted it too close to a killer peony.  That peony has since been divided and hopefully will give Ibis more room to breathe.  It still was a trooper though, it's pod fertile.:)

(Reckamp, 1963)  Height 24", bloom 2", season EM, Dormant, Diploid,  Melon pink, cream, yellow and orchid polychrome with orange throat.

Fertile both ways.  I am using this because of its size and hoping to bring out its colors in the UF's.

5", dark red with yellow/green throat, UF.  No more stats available this year.  This seedling has got to be out of (Nutmeg Elf x Spider Miracle) x Brer Rabbit's Baby.  I expect it to be reasonably branched, as its parents.  Fertile.

This one knocked my socks off this year with its color.  Fertile both ways too.:)

All I can say is that this is out of spider breeding, probably has bridge plant Nutmeg Elf x Spider Miracle in it.  Approximately 3.5" flower.

4", yellow UF.  (Nutmeg Elf x Spider Miracle) x (Nutmeg Elf x Spider Miracle).  No more stats available this year, but I expect it to be well branched and very fertile both ways.  WOW, what an improvement in form over Nutmeg Elf!

Ned laughed back when he heard the cross, but was approving of the appearance of the bloom.  Always having been a bridge plant for me, I’ve gotten some interesting things from it because it does give up its color.  Extremely fertile both ways.

5" spider, sorry, but didn't take accurate stats this year.  I’m hoping that the lack of color in this one might enable it to give up its color and take on others.

It was only at the end of this summer that I realized that this is BR No. 10, a Ned seedling that was selected for introduction in 2008, but that didn’t happen.

EE, 4 ¼”, 30 Ht, coral red, green throat, very curly segments. 3x rebloom!!  54 BC, 7-way branching.

One of my personal favorites of the smalls, still in evaluation up north.
